Introduction
- Describe where you come from
I'm from Bakersfield, California. It's hot and miserable most of the time, and it gets pretty cold in the winter, but it only snows about once every 20 or so years.
- Tell me where you're going
I'm going wherever I can be a sports journalist. That's been my dream for a while now, and anywhere I can do it, that's where I'm going.
- Tell me how you plan to get there
First I'm gonna pay off my loans by getting any job and staying with my parents, then I'm gonna send out applications all around the country until someone picks me up.
- How are you LIKE your parents
Like my Dad, I can be stubborn and a bit of a hard ass, but believe it or not it helps me more often than it hurts me. Like my Mom, I can be a bit too uptight sometimes.
- How are you UNLIKE your parents
Maybe this doesn't exactly answer the question as it was asked, but my parents went kind of easy on me and let me do my own thing. They said they knew I'd figure things out eventually, and they were right. Meanwhile I'm hard on myself and have high expectations, and I have a bad habit of pushing that onto others as well.
- Have you developed your own expectations for yourself, or if you were honest, would you say you're operating under someone else's expectations?
I've developed my own expectations of myself. Growing up, I didn't have a lot of people taking up my side or standing in my corner, so my high expectations of myself definitely come from me.
- Who, other than a relative, serves as a model for you of someone who lives life with great passion and personal responsibility?
I would say Kobe Bryant did. Kobe was my biggest sports idol growing up, and I loved his passion, his work ethic and his dedication to being the best, and I try to do the same with myself.
- Connecting with the ANIMAL WORLD: What wild animal do you feel a special connection with, and why?
I think probably the best comparison right now is a lion. Lions are kind of lazy, but they're also strong and determined animals. I feel connected to that now because I'm determined to graduate and start making my mark in the real world.
- Connecting with the NATURE KINGDOMS: Describe a significant childhood encounter with a tree or plant.
When I was younger my family and I went to see there redwood sequoias, and they're pretty incredible. Just seeing how big they are and knowing those trees are thousands of years old, that they were there before I was and they'll still be here long after I'm gone, it's pretty cool and puts things into perspective.
- My Sun Sign is 18 degrees Libra.
- My Moon Sign is 27 degrees Pisces.
- My Ascendant or Rising Sign is 27 degrees Pisces.
Like yourself, I have a connection to Bakersfield, due to that being the place where two of my uncles live and my great grandma. About twice a year I make a trip down there to visit them, and check up on my grandma. It's definitely different than Los Angeles, but I like the calmness of the area.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to drive up and see the sequoia trees. Definitely a bucket list item of mine. And super start maneuver to stay home and get those loans knocked out!
ReplyDeleteI agree that redwood sequoias are incredible to admire. My favorite fun fact is actually that the oldest tree in the world is currently almost 5 thousand years old. Its called the Methuselah tree if you're interested in learning more.
ReplyDeleteI have only heard how beautiful the Sequoia trees are and have never been. Because of you I am planning to visit them this semester! Thanks Justin for writing in a genuine way and sharing your background and upbringing.
ReplyDeleteHey Justin, being a sports journalist would be so cool! Your plan on how you're gonna become a sports journalist is so real. Loans are not fun at all. I gotta agree that Kobe Bryant is a legend. Go Lakers!!
ReplyDeleteBakersfield sounds like a very interesting city, hot and miserable and freezing in the winter. I gotta go check it out sometimes!
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny for mentioning that lions can be perceived as lazy but then turning it around to say that they are actually strong and determined. I also appreciate how real and raw you were about willing to work anywhere in order to pay off your student loans.
ReplyDeleteHey Justin, I love the Kobe Bryant connection. I think it is great that he is a role model for you because the mamba mentality highlights everything you mentioned of how you want to succeed in your life so far. Stay determined and keep going strong!!!
